Windham County Humane Society is an existing shelter in Brattleboro, Vermont. This Humane Society was very undersized and required expansion. The significant site and regulatory limitations were a challenge as a stream in the rear of the property had to be relocated, wetlands preserved and setbacks provided to maintain the significant Vermont environmental requirements. Normally, we design facilities for the functional requirements and buildings often assume a shape based on the floor plan. In this case, we used the site limitations to create the shape of the building first and then creating a well-functioning floor plan within the confines of the 4,300 square foot expansion.
