Paws & Claws Rescue & Resort is a 17,000 square foot boarding facility and animal shelter in Hackensack, Minnesota. This was built by a private client that wanted to give the community a very upscale facility for animals while providing for adoption and rescue of abandoned pets. The primary challenge in this type of situation is to create spaces that are conducive to showcasing boarding and shelter animals equally while maintaining the necessary separation, safety and quarantine required of some shelter animals. Our solution was to design the facility with a central public lobby but two similarly equipped wings: one for boarding and one for sheltering. Animals on both sides are visible through glass partition walls, yet each area has its own mechanical systems, food preparation and holding areas. This allows for isolation of the shelter animals from the boarding areas.
